Wags & Whiskers is a 501(C)(3). We work through referring partners and are devoted to preserving the sacred bond between people and their animal companions. Wags & Whiskers is a unique nonprofit that uses a fresh innovative approach to tackle the pressing unmet need for temporary pet care while the family address their own medical issues. We provide a positive solution and reunite after recovery.

Pets are considered a cherished family member. A family member facing medical issues finds so much peace of mind just knowing their pet will be temporarily cared for like family and they will be reunited. The family now has hope and is allowed to focus on their health and recovery knowing they will see their pet again. Wags & Whisker’s Pet Caregiver Program provides the support that is crucial to both the pet’s well-being and the owner’s peace of mind resulting in an improved recovery time.

How It Works 

Wags & Whiskers has developed a team of loving, compassionate Volunteer Pet Caregivers who open their homes and care for the pets of family members hospitalized, sick or recovering from medical issues. We then re-unite the family with their pet once the sick family member is back home and on their feet.

Wags & Whiskers partners with a network of organizations who refer pet owners with medical needs. Once a referral is received, a Wags and Whiskers team member will contact the referral within 24 hours to learn more about the pet and family, and discuss the qualification process and determine if the program is right for them. Once qualified, the coordinating team will match the pet in need to a Volunteer Pet Caregiver until the owner is back home.

PET OWNER ELIGIBILITY & REQUIREMENTS

Read the following eligibility requirements before completing the Application for Temporary Pet Care As the Pet Owner.

I understand to be considered for Wags & Whiskers services, I must;

  • Be temporarily unable to care for your pet due to a time-limited medical or health issues of the pet owner.

  • Be referred by a Wags & Whiskers designated partnering organization.

  • Apply to Wags & Whiskers as a last resort. I confirm I have checked all possible resources and there is no other acceptable options for my pet’s temporary care.

  • Provide specific dates when you will deliver your pet(s) for temporary pet care and pick up your pet to resume providing pet care on my own.

  • Provide your pet’s food, supplies, and medications at drop off with a Volunteer Pet Caregiver for the duration of the pet’s stay.

  • Cover the cost of any additionally needed food, supplies and medications for your pet in temporary care.

  • Cover the expenses for any medical care including emergency medical care while your pet is temporarily cared for by a Volunteer Pet Caregiver.

  • Provide a clear digital picture of your pet(s) needing temporary pet care.

  • Provide current pet medical records during the application process and demonstrate your pet(s) is spayed/neutered and up-to-date on all vaccinations.

A Wags & Whiskers team member will contact you within 48 hours of receipt of your application to learn more and further discuss the qualification process. Wags & Whiskers reserves the right to request proof of any of the above requirements. Completion of the application does not guarantee approval into the program. Pet owner must complete the qualification process to be considered.

Wags & Whiskers Conditions:

  • Wags & Whiskers will not accept or care for any animal(s) with a history of destructive or aggressive behavior towards humans or other animals.

  • Wags & Whiskers cannot guarantee placement for qualified applicants. Wags & Whiskers is a volunteer organization. Therefore, pet placement depends on the availability, skills, and willingness of Volunteer Pet Caregivers to accept a pet for temporary care.
